The Final Swim – A Story For Visual Dare

I couldn’t get the imagination to work when I saw this photo prompt from Visual Dare, then this piece of dialogue flew into my head.

The Final Swim

“When you’re ready Mr. Jones.”

“But I can’t swim.”

“Don’t worry about that sir, the level of salt in the water will keep you afloat and the strong current will take you in the right direction. Lots of people who do this can’t swim. You’ll be fine.”

“But I don’t want to.”

“I’m sorry Mr. Jones but you don’t have a choice. You’re name has been officially selected. Once that happens there’s no going back. You know the rules. Now, either you jump or I’ll have to get one of the guards to throw you in. What’s it going to be?”

“But I can’t, you know what’s at the end of the pier, I’ll die. Please, you’ve got to help me, I don’t want to die.”

“We all have to die Mr. Jones, just some of us sooner than others. Guards!”
