The Safe Word

A 100 word story for Inspiration Monday.

The Safe Word

He always promised to keep me safe. I only had to say the word and he’d make sure nothing would ever harm me. Fine rhetoric, and what’s more I believed him, but where is he now? Why has he deserted me at a time, when I need him most? I’ve called out his name in the middle of night, got down on bended knees and begged him to help, but nothing. It’s as if I don’t exist. Has he forgotten me? I keep wondering if it’s my fault? Is it because I can’t remember the word – the safe word?

  1. Reminds me of the lyrics to a Regina Spektor song…”God can be funny when told he’ll give you money if you just pray the right way…”

I like the “as if I don’t exist” part. Most people start believing the opposite.
